HOW DO I MAKE MY SOURDOUGH SANDWICH BREAD: STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Activate the Starter:
1. In a large bowl, mix the active sourdough starter and warm water until fully combined.
Stir in the sugar and melted butter (or olive oil).
Make the Dough:
2. Add the bread flour and salt to the starter mixture.
Mix until a rough dough forms.
3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise:
4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 4-6 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Dough:
5. Once the dough has doubled in size, use your fist to release the gas.
6. Place the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf.
7. Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan.
Second Rise:
8. Cover the loaf pan with a damp cloth and let the dough rise again for 2-4 hours, or until it has risen above the edge of the pan.
Bake the Bread:
9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
10. Bake the bread for 35-40 minutes, or until it has a golden-brown crust and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
11. If the top browns too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
Cool the Bread:
12. Take out the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
13. Before slicing, transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely.
